These tags served a dual purpose. As they climbed onto the rickety elevator, they placed their number tag on the board to signal they’d be working below. When they exited the mine at the end of their shift they’d take the tag back down. Further, down below when they’d shoveled a coal car full, they’d hang a tag on the cart to receive credit when it was hauled topside. Great historical statement in these tags!
