The author, Ens. George Gay, USNR, who flew from the USS Hornet, WAS the sole survivor. He was rescued the day after the battle. His squadron was awarded The American Presidential Unit Citation. He was awarded the Navy Cross and a Purple Heart. He later rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. This book is his memoire of the battle.
