Lettre Venant de la Floride: In 1562 Jean Ribaut led a group of Huguenots to Parris Island, South Carolina and erected a fort. The venture was short-lived—Ribaut returned to France for reinforcements and his colonists, unable to support themselves, followed a few months later. In 1564 a new expedition under the leadership of René de Laudonnière settled farther south and erected Fort Caroline near what is now Jacksonville, Florida.
