This is a carving of a Beluga Whale that is mounted on a piece of “Old Ivory”. The Beluga whale is also be carved from a piece of “Old Ivory” although it was not from the same tusk since the coloring of the two pieces are different shades of brown. Old Ivory is from Ivory found in the tundra and is from Mammoth tusks, at least 10,000 years old. You can tell by the color of the ivory itself since it is light brown in color. Mammoth ivory can be light brown to dark brown in color depending on the minerals in the soil where it is found. This carving shows two different colors.
