Description:

This intaglio is No. 221 from the Storia Romana collection which was created by Cades between 1807 and 1828.  Cades, along with several other famous engravers such as the Paoletti father and son team, were highly sought out during this era by royalty, elitists and commoners alike for their intaglio impressions of Greek mythology figures, Roman heroes and heroines and mythical creatures.  The Tommaso Cades intaglios are considered quite rare now as most reside in private collections such as the Earl of Beverley Collection in Alnwick Castle in Great Britain as well as museums including The German Archeological Institute in Rome, Italy as well as The Cast Gallery at the Ashmolean, Oxford, England and the British Museum. The majority of purchasers of Cades Intaglios during the Grand Tour era were from Germany and unfortunately the time of war resulted in the loss of many of these precious antiquities.  In Germany a large collection exists in the Akademische Kunstmuseum, Collection of Antiquities of the Dept. of Classical Archaeology, University of Bonn.
