This is a German earthenware molded beer stein with pewter lid made by F. Gerbin Witwe company of Germany (marked FGW #1736). This piece was created c. 1850-1900 during the Historismus period, when German stein makers, who held the work of their predecessors in high regard, began making tributes to earlier chip carved styles and shapes. This one is a tribute to the earlier religious themed, Raeren Stoneware steins. This piece is filled with religious / Christian symbolism. Three figures are surrounded by the Latin words for Faith, Hope, and Charity, the three theological virtues. Lions heads protrude from the three sides. In between the 3 figures are birds, monkeys, flowers, winged creatures, small faces, and cornucopias.
Approximate Measurements are 10.5" tall. Body is approximately 6" in diameter. Base is approximately 4" in diameter. There are additional markings on this antique stein which cannot be dated (Ethel Wright for Gilar). This is a fascinating piece of German Stein history and would make a valuable addition to any Stein admirer's collection.
