Gorgeous detailed hand painting.  Artist signed initials JS or could be FS.  What is a marriage jug? This was a piece of artwork usually bestowed as a gift to the newly wed couple from a wealthy family member or parents and was meant to bestow luck, wealth, happiness and many children upon them.  The smaller spout was designed for the new bride from which she would "sip" the red wine at the wedding reception table, so of course the large spout would be for the groom to "gulp" the red wine.  It is said the wedding jug bestowed courage and bravado to the groom for the wedding night. With a spout that size, no wonder!  The art of Talavera is fascinating and only certain colors and certain clays are allowed to be used by artists who must be registered in a particular region of Spain in order to ensure their complete authenticity.  This beautiful piece is in immaculate condition.
