Description:

The production of swords in Japan is divided into specific time periods:

  • Jokotō (ancient swords, until around A.D. 900)
  • Kotō (old swords from around 900–1596)
  • Shintō (new swords 1596–1780)
  • Shinshintō (newer swords 1781–1876)
  • Gendaitō (modern or contemporary swords 1876–present)

The wakizashi has a blade between 12" and 24" in length. Wakizashi have been in use as far back as the 15th or 16th century. The wakizashi was used as a backup or auxiliary sword; it was also used for close quarters fighting, to behead a defeated opponent and sometimes to commit seppuku. This antique sword was evaluated in 1979 (see pictures) and it was determined this sword is from the late Koto period and was made at the Seki School in the Mino Province of Japan.  Seki School was one of the prominent swordsmiths of Japanese Wakizashi and Katana swords.

This sword is in fine condition commiserate with its age of hundreds of years old. Please study all the pictures to ascertain its condition for yourself.  This is a remarkable opportunity to own a genuine Wakizashi sword and a piece of Japanese antiquity history.
